Clinton, Maryland is located in the Washington-Arlington metro area. It is an unincorporated census designated place for Prince George's County. The population is approximately 35,000. Before the Civil War, it was called Surratsville, and it was actually only a crossroads with a few buildings. The main residence was owned by Mary Surrat, who was hanged for involvement in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Her house is now the Surrat Museum which focuses on the assassination. The local high school still carries the name Surratsville. Historians in the local area have urged Clinton to take back its historical name.

Clinton is mostly single family housing, but there are a few townhouse communities. Cosca Regional Park is a public facility that offers a great playground, fishing, hiking, camping, and a nature museum that has nature activities. There is a large shopping complex with plans to build more shopping areas. Visitors can park in a public parking lot and take a bus to the Branch Avenue station of the Washington metro rail system. Clinton is home to several famous people such as the Oscar winning actress, Marcia Gay Harden and soap opera actress Laura Wright. Both of these girls grew up in the town and graduated from Surratsville High School.
